Changing your lighting system to reduce electric bill

Traditional incandescent light bulbs tend to consume high energy and give off unwanted heat. Light bulbs as we all know are a staple in the house both inside and outside. A house can have ten to twenty light bulbs and all of them get to be used several hours of the day.

That is a steady chunk of money being wasted over time. But do you know you can light your home using the same amount of bulbs but at a lower cost? Switching incandescent bulbs with energy efficient bulbs will reduce your electric bills drastically.

So what are your lighting choices? There are several good options to choose from when it comes to energy efficient light bulbs but the most popular ones are;

LED bulbs (light emitting diodes)
Halogen bulbs
CFLs (compact florescent lamps)

LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes. The color of the plastic lens is often the same as the actual color of light emitted, but not always. LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light sources, including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, smaller size, and faster switching. LEDs are used in applications as diverse as aviation lighting , automotive headlamps, advertising, general lighting , traffic signals, camera flashes, and lighted wallpaper. They are also significantly more energy efficient and, arguably, have fewer environmental concerns linked to their disposal.

Halogen bulbs

Also known as tungsten halogen or quartz iodine lamp. They can last up to 4,000 hours. That is nearly four times longer than incandescent bulbs. However they are not as efficient as LED bulbs or CFLs.

CFLs

Compared to incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use about one-fifth of the electric power, and lasts a lot longer. Some CFLs can be used with dimmers

Other ways you can reduce electric bill in your home

Always keep your fridge closed and full.
